Before the general meeting, Eduction Chair Greg Courtney held a beginner's class on an "Introduction to Trilobites."
At the general meeting at 8 pm, Jack Kallmeyer took care of
business matters first.
Next, Bill Heimbrock gave a preview of the field trip to be
held the next morning. It included how to get there, how to collect, and what
types of fossils to expect to find.
Jack Kallmeyer then passed around the door prize signup sheet.
Our club councellor, Dr. David Meyer, then brought us up to
date on developments at the UC Geology Dept and at the Cincinnati of Natrual
History and Science. Included were information on the much anticipated NAPC
event, the Science
Lecture @Cincinnati Museum Center by Dr. Peter Dodson and the new Omnimax
show "Sea
Monsters" at the Cincinnati
Museum Center.
Numbers were then drawn for the door prizes.
Finally, Vice President Rich Fuchs introduced the feature
presentation: a video special edition of Walking the Dinosaurs series focusing
specifically on Allosaurus, a Jurassic predecessor to Tyrannosaurus rex. The
program is narrated by Kenneth Branagh, and uses the fossilized remains of an
Allosaurus, nicknamed "Big Al," as the basis for the story. Using
state-of-the-art computer animation, Big Al is brought to life as viewers
discover how this ferocious predator mated, hunted, and died. Also included is
Big Al Uncovered, a "making of" segment of sorts. Using the Big Al
fossils, scientists explain why they attributed particular traits and
characteristics to the animated Big Al.
After the presentation, it was time for "show and
tell," where we show what fossils we found and get identifications as
needed.
The meeting always lasts a long time, since people continue to
talk after the formal parts of the meeting are over. By 10 pm, the attending
younger members are starting to wear out...
That's it! See you at next month's meeting on Friday, November 16.
