Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th: Penn Dixie SIte, NY
Good weather prevailed on Saturday as the Dry Dredgers arrived at the Penn Dixie Site in Hamburg, NY.
There were greetings and information available at the shelter about what we can
find and a little history of the site.
The site is a large plot of land where the fossiliferous shale is completely
exposed. For more information on this fossil site, see their web site at
http://www.penndixie.org.
Best Finds of the Day
Trilobites
Probably the best find of the day was these two slabs absolutely covered with
Phacops rana trilobites! Amazing find!
The next best find was this Greenops sp. trilobite.
There were quite a lot of individual Phacops rana trilobites found by Dry Dredgers.
Brachiopods
Yes, brachiopods are something to get excited about at a site where the common fossil is the trilobite. :-)
We found a few Spinatrypa spinosa brachiopods. The
first 2 pics show the bottom and top of one specimen. The next picture shows 2
specimens.
The next brachiopod is a spirifer that is probably Mucrospirifer consobrinus. (next 2 pics)
Here is a nice cluster of the brachiopod Orbiculoidea sp..
(next 2 pics)
I think this next fossil is a horn coral, but I'm not sure.
And now the fun part. Here are the photos of Dry Dredgers breaking shale together and enjoying the day.
That's all for this trip. Thanks to Jim and Kim Cox and Dawn Kincaid for photos. Thanks also to Bob Bross for leading the trip despite his knee difficulties.
